Cyber security. It is and will be a hot topic in the logistics industry. How do you keep intruders out? And in what ways do your users log in to your systems safely? Authentication is the answer. However, standing still with this is a risk too. You will have to follow new developments in authentication in order to keep supporting your systems. Safely.

Replace POP3 with Office 365 Outlook Connector

Earlier, we wrote about the changes in authentication before. About the move to OAuth2 for inbound web service calls and Azure AD App registration for outbound email (SMTP). Now, these changes also apply to incoming e-mails (POP3) on Office 365 mail accounts. This is nothing new; Microsoft has been announcing this for a long time already. However, now, there is also a definitive deadline: January 1st, 2023.

What is POP3?
POP3, often called Post Office Protocol, is a protocol for retrieving emails from a mail server. POP3 is an internet standard that authenticates the emails from the server to a client’s email program.

Why does Microsoft stop supporting POP3?

In fact, Microsoft does not stop with POP3 but with the Basic Authentication for POP3. The main reason for this is security. Basic Authentication is no longer enough to secure your emails. While securing emails has never been more important than it is now. Only imagine what kind of sensitive information you share via email on a daily basis. With Basic Authentication, there is a high risk of data breaches. And this also endangers your logistic operation.

What does this mean for you?

If you haven’t taken any steps yet, now is the time to act. Otherwise, you will no longer be able to receive e-mails in systems other than Outlook, for example. So, check your connections. And find out if these changes affect your processes. Do not just think of the “ordinary” communication but also the integration messages that you receive and process via e-mail. Be proactive and prevent issues after January 1st, 2023.
