As a logistic service provider, you want to serve your customers to the best of your abilities. However, when you store or transport dangerous goods, you must not only take your customers into account, you also need to meet several (inter)national rules. And that job isn’t an easy one. To secure the safety of all parties involved, these rules must be followed to the letter. Counties, as well as international allegiances, have set clear rules for the transportation and storage of dangerous goods. But these rules change over the years, especially after a new disaster concerning stored dangerous goods. What does this mean for you? And in what way can you simplify the already difficult process?

Is there a new set of rules on the way?

It might be speculative, but the rules and regulations for transportation and storage of dangerous goods may change drastically in the near future. After a new disaster in Beirut, all companies that store hazardous substances will be watched closely. Furthermore, international agreements as the ADR and the Seveso rules might be re-discussed. In any way, you as a logistic service provider have to do your job. Therefore, it is important that your process is flawless, and you have an up to date administration of the stored goods.

The Seveso disaster as a base for better regulations.
In 1976, a catastrophic accident in the Italian town Seveso shook the world. However, what can be seen as one of the worst industrial disasters in history, is also the start for better regulations concerning dangerous goods, to prevent a similar event from happening. This resulted in the Seveso Directive. But, as said before, these regulations change over the years. After the first Seveso Directive and Seveso II, Seveso III was established in 2012; a set of rules that apply to more than 12.000 companies in the European Union.
